Joseph Nicholas Barth (1906-1988) was born in Salina, Kansas. He attended a number of schools, including Creighton University and Wesleyan University. In 1934 he married Ramona Sawyer and they had five children. He received a PhB in 1935 from the University of Chicago and a BD from Meadville Theological School, which in 1956 also granted him a DD.
